NEWCASTLE HOMES RENOVATIONS

Make your guest bath a statement

Your guest bath is the perfect opportunity to get creative and show off a little bit. Don’t let it be an afterthought. Make it a statement! The guest bath is frequently a powder room, so a little goes a long way. This is the perfect space to introduce color, pattern and more ostentatious design than you might want in other parts of your home.

Inject a little color!

A dark and moody bedroom or office isn’t for everyone, but the guest bath is the perfect place to add a little saturation.

  • Wallpaper: Wallpaper is often too loud for a large space and too overwhelming for a space where you’ll spend a lot of time, but it’s perfect for a small space that’s infrequently used. Wallpaper is also expensive, so a smaller, simpler room is a great way to incorporate it.
  • Paint: Painting a small room a deep color can make it seem larger.
  • Tile: A guest bath is a great place to splurge on tile for a big impact in a small space.
  • Countertops: We love incorporating a dramatic marble or quartzite in a guest bath! It adds a huge punch that might overwhelm a larger space AND you can find remnants of stellar slabs for cheap.

Pick a focal point

With so much color or pattern going on in such a small space, it’s really important to have a focal point. For us, this is usually the vanity. A fabulous mirror and coordinating lighting will give the eye somewhere to rest in a busy room. Remember: a room is a composition. Your eye should travel, but it should do so in an orderly way and end up where YOU intended.

Logistics

We often don’t have the luxury of changing the location of our guest bath, but if you’re renovating, adding on or building custom, we recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • Location: You want your guest bath near entertaining spaces.
  • Location: While you want your guest bath near entertaining spaces, you don’t want a door directly to one of those spaces if possible. Just off the living or dining room is ideal.
  • Location: If you have a pool and a full guest bath, try to have a swing door directly to the pool – keep wet feet from tracking all through your house.
  • Pocket doors: Powder rooms often end up with a pocket door, but these are… less than soundproof. Get a solid-core swing door in there if you can.
